Aechmea gamosepala, also known as the "bottle brush bromeliad". I found lots of information on it. A good picture is at http://www.tropiflora.com/images/421.jpg - also at http://www.charlies-web.com/alphalist/tex569.html It was described at Glasshouseworks as being "nearly spineless". Thereis also a variegated form of it that sounds beautiful.
